How do I search for media and music materials in the library catalog?

Author Search

Searches for authors, performers, producers, directors, or anyone who had a hand in the creation of the recording or video. Also searches for distribution and production companies.

Must be inputted: LAST NAME, FIRST NAME
Ex: Hitchcock, Alfred, for films directed by Alfred Hitchcock
Ex. Pro Musica Antiqua, for recordings by this musical group

Use the pull-down menu to select Videos or Sound Recordings.

Keyword Search

Searches for words within the title, subject, or contents notes. Use this to find works within a compilation, or the opus or Kochel number of a specific piece
Ex: 248, for March in F for 2 horns, 2 violins, viola and bass, KV 248 by Mozart.
Ex. Turkish march, for Turkish march from "The Ruins of Athens" by Beethoven

Use the "Limit to" pull-down menu to select Videos or Sound Recordings , or the "Material Type" menu to select SCORES.

Title Search

Searches for EXACT titles of videos or album titles. If you don't know the EXACT title, use a Keyword search.
Ex: A little night music
Ex. A little

Use the pull-down menu to select Videos or Sound Recordings.

Subject Search

Searches for films ABOUT your subject. You must use the EXACT Library of Congress subject heading (when in doubt, use a Keyword search):
Ex: Hitchcock, Alfred, for material about Hitchcock
Ex. Symphony, for books about the symphony
Ex. Symphonies, for scores and recordings of symphonies

Use the "Limit to" pull-down menu to select Videos or Sound Recordings , or the "Material Type" menu to select SCORES.

Call Number Search

Searches for items by their call number. Music recording and score call numbers must be searched under Local Call No., Videos and CD-ROMs under Library of Congress Call No.

Author/Title Search

This is useful if you know an actor's or producer's name and the beginning of an EXACT title. N.B.: much of the time, this will not find music items.
Ex: 248, for March in F for 2 horns, 2 violins, viola and bass, KV 248 by Mozart.
