Reed College Library

Instruction

Library research is a fundamental part of a Reed education. The Reed College Library provides an excellent reference collection, indexes and bibliographies, and electronic databases to help students find the resources they need. For students who need books or journal articles not found in the Reed College Library collection, the library provides several options for obtaining materials from other libraries and from the Internet.

Librarians are available to help students with all aspects of library research. They can meet with students individually, in classes or in other groups. Recently, the Library received a Mellon Foundation grant that enables faculty and librarians to collaborate on the development of instruction on library research methods and sources in preparation for the senior thesis. To schedule library sessions, or to learn more about any of these activities, please contact Dena Hutto, Director of Reference & Instruction (x7572), or your department's library liaison.

Schedule a Tour
Librarians give tours of the library building, collections, and resources for students, faculty, staff, and other groups. Tours emphasizing collections and resources for specific classes and disciplines can also be arranged.

Arrange for a Librarian to Speak to Your Class
Librarians prepare class sessions on library resources for your class assignments. These sessions can include research guides, bibliographies, database demonstrations, or tours of the reference collection.

Encourage Students to Meet with a Librarian One-on-One
Students who are undertaking the senior thesis or other challenging research projects benefit from working directly with a librarian who knows the library's resources in their subject area. Librarians can suggest methods of locating information, perform specialized database searches, and recommend resources at other libraries in the area.

Watch for Library Information Sessions
Everyone in the Reed community is invited to information sessions about exciting new library resources. Look for announcements during the academic year.
