Beginning Research & Supporting Information

We will spend some time talking about the Scientific Writing process -- how to write a good abstract, the correct style for citing sources, how to obtain copyright permission for tables or images, and finally, we will look at some very useful scientific writing resources.

Next comes Navigating the Library. Not only will we discuss the process of identifying and finding books and journal articles, but we will also talk about what to do when Reed Library does not own something you need, i.e. Summit & ILL.

A preliminary survey of the literature will help you get a sense of what has been done before, what questions you need to answer & how you should go about conducting your research. In this section, Background Research, we will talk about review articles, theses, and "The Web", and what role these resources can play in your research.

Reference Sources are extremely useful when looking for background information, facts and data. Those of you taking the qual should pay particular attention here!
