Departmental Seminar Summary

Beginning Research & Supporting Information -- Session 1 (Sept 8, 4:15-5:45, Library 17)

In this first session, we get a lot of housekeeping-type stuff out of the way. Although some of the information may be a review, I am sure you will pick up a lot of new, useful information.

  • We will spend some time talking about the Scientific Writing process -- including the correct style for citing sources, how to obtain copyright permission for tables or images, and finally, we will look at some very useful scientific writing resources. (You might want to keep a copy of Luc's presentation for reference)

  • Next comes Navigating the Library. Not only will we discuss the process of identifying and finding books and journal articles, but we will also talk about what to do when Reed Library does not own something you need, i.e. Summit & ILL.

  • A preliminary survey of the literature will help you get a sense of what has been done before, what questions you need to answer & how you should go about conducting your research. In this section, Background Research, we will talk about review articles, theses, and "The Web", and what role these resources can play in your research.

  • Reference Sources are extremely useful when looking for background information, facts and data.

  • Now, for the grand finale, we will talk about someting everyone struggles with, Citation Management. I will run you through your options for dealing with citations and demo a couple of the more popular programs. Don't miss this. It is great!
