Copyright Permissions

According to the Thesis Formatting Guide it is the student's responsibility to obtain necessary permissions for use of previously published figures and tables. In most cases, permission should be obtained from the publisher of the journal or book from which the figure is taken. Although I can not obtain permission for you, the following is a list of links to permission request information from publishers of some of the more commonly used journals.

If you do not know who published the journal from which you are taking the figure, use Ulrich's International Periodicals Directory. Not only can you find publication information, but you might also find a link to the publisher's web site.

Copyright Clearance Center
Many publishers send you here to get copyright permissions. The site can be a little confusing, so let me know if you have questions.

American Chemical Society
For ACS publications, you will need to go to the Thesis & Dissertations section.

American Society for Microbiology (Journal List)

American Association for the Advancement of Science (Publishers of Science)
For a figure or table only (ie, not an excerpt), you can use this form instead.

Company of Biologists

Elsevier
Includes Science Direct titles, as well as titles published by Academic Press, Cell Press, Lancet, Mosby, Pergamon

Nature
The quickest way is to click on the 'Rights and Permissions' link on the upper right hand corner of the article's main page (or the abstract page). If the link isn't available, email permissions@nature.com. For more information, go here.

PNAS

The Royal Society

The Royal Society of Chemistry
