How to Get Research Materials
Searching Reed's Library:
First, check the Reed Catalog. If your book is available at the Reed Library, great!
Searching Summit:
If it is not in our holdings or unavailable right now, you can order the book online from Summit. You will need the barcode number on your student ID card. From the Reed Catalog, click on
"Search
in Summit". If you find the book you are looking for, click on the title. If the item is available, click on "Request
Summit Item" and
follow the instructions. After you have requested a Summit item, you may View Your
Record to see whether the item has arrived. Books arrive generally in 2-3 working days and you will be notified by email of their arrival.
Searching WorldCat:
If the book is not available in Summit, your next step is to check WorldCat. If you find it, simply click on the ILL button at the top of the screen, enter the requested information and wait to be notified by email that it has arrived.
When in Doubt:
If the book you need is not available in WorldCat (maybe it is brand-new), get in touch with a Reference Librarian.
Where else can I get it?
If the book is not available in the Reed Library or through Summit, go to the ILL Request Form and fill it out as completely as you can. When the book arrives, you will receive notification via email.
How to Get Articles
Searching Reed's Library:
After you've found an article citation in a database, bibliography or other source, use that citation to find out the name of the journal in which it appears and look up the journal title in the Print & E Journals list.
Is it in Print?
If it is in our holdings, you will see whether or not it is available in print or online. If it is in print, consult a Reference Librarian or a map of the library to determine where it is shelved.
Is it Online?
If it is online, click the link to the journal's site. After that, use the search function of that database to find your particular article. Then, print it out, read it online, or email it to yourself.
Where else can I get it?
If the article is not available in any form at the Reed Library, your next step is to go to the ILL Request Form and enter the requested information as completely as you can. When it arrives, you will either receive it via email, or in your campus mailbox.
The Voice of Experience speaks:
The average delivery time for articles ranges from a few days to several weeks. Articles ordered through FirstSearch databases come faster than those ordered using the ILL form. It is important to order all of your articles early in the research process, because, unlike books (which have a limited due date), you can keep articles to read at your leisure.
When in Doubt:
If you cannot locate a needed article using the above methods, ask a Reference Librarian for assistance. Reed Librarians are the information experts, and they really want to help you.
