Windows
- Insert a blank, writable CD into the CD drive.
- Click the files or folders you want to copy to the CD. To select more than one file, hold down the CTRL key while you click the files you want.
- Right click the selected files, go to Send To and click DVD/CD-RW Drive.
- Double-click the CD drive icon (in the Access Drives folder or click Start -> My Computer). Windows displays a temporary area where the files are held before they are copied to the CD. Verify that the files and folders that you intend to copy to the CD appear under Files Ready to be Written to the CD.
- Under CD Writing Tasks, click Write these files to CD. Windows displays the CD Writing Wizard. Follow the instructions in the wizard.
Note: After you copy files or folders to the CD, it is useful to view the CD to confirm that the files are copied.
Windows CD-Burning FAQ/Troubleshooting
Can I reuse my CD?
Usually.
To completely erase a CD-RW before reusing it, double-click the "Access Drives" icon to get to My Computer, right-click your CD-RW, and choose "erase".
To try to add files to your writeable CD without erasing, follow the original instructions. Keep in mind that previously written files are rewritten thereby doubling the space they take on the CD.
Mac
The ten iMacs in the Reading Room have CD-RW drives. Here's how to burn your own data CD:
- Insert a blank CD-R or CD-RW, or CD-RW you are willing to erase
- Drag the files and folders you want to it. Files can't be added once the CD is burned
- Arrange the files on the CD exactly as you want them before burning the disc. The names of files, folders, and the disc can't be changed after the CD is burned.
- Choose "Burn CD" from the File menu.
