Ambrotype (1850s-1880s)

Ambrotype

Ambrotype photographs were made using a collodion wet plate process, which is when negative images were placed on a black background to appear as a positive image. They were cheaper to produce than daguerreotypes. There are many ambrotypes that appear in the Reed papers, such as this ambrotype of Simeon and Amanda Reed.
