Dalles City from Rockland, Columbia River
The stereograph above was taken by C.E. Watkins, a prolific photographer active from the mid-1800s to early 1900s. The stereograph shows The Dalles, Oregon from the Rockland, Washington side of the Columbia River. As is apparent from the stereograph, The Dalles was beginning to industrialize at the time. The stereograph is part of a collection of photos from California and the Pacific Northwest that were commissioned by an Act of Congress in 1867. It belongs to the Simeon and Amanda Reed Papers. Simeon Reed’s fortune was built from his Columbia River shipping enterprise.
