Students Waiting in Line for Food in Commons

In this 1945 photo, Reed students wait in line for food in Commons. Students dressed more formally than you might find at dinnertime in Commons today, and the dining choices appear to be limited. At the time, Commons was housed inside what is now the Student Union. The new Commons dining hall, now housed inside the Gray Campus Center, was completed in 1965 and later renovated in 1997. Today, the Student Union remains a center of campus life, but is no longer home to regular mealtimes, with the exception of food-centered events sometimes hosted in the SU by student groups.
