Placing Material On Course Reserve
Faculty: request print and electronic reserves for your courses.
Get started early! Before each semester, aim for at least 8 weeks to allow us time to order, process, and/or digitize reserve requests. During the school year, allow at least 5 business days. Earlier requests are always appreciated. We do our best to accommodate emergency situations.
Need assistance? Contact reserves staff at reserves@reed.edu.
Required and recommended textbooks
The library will seek to provide multiple copies of all required and recommended course textbooks as 3-hour print reserves. This process begins after you place your textbook requisition requests through the Reed Bookstore's order form and requires no additional action from you.
Additional print reserves
For print reserve material that students are not required to purchase, please use these forms:
- New reserve books
- Books from the library catalog
- Music, films, and other media: write to Jim Holmes at holmesj@reed.edu.
Repeat courses
We can usually create new print or electronic reserves lists from an earlier course's reserves. Let us know at reserves@reed.edu if you would like us to reuse previous lists.
Electronic reserves
We will add new e-reserve items as links to electronic resources (e.g. JSTOR) available through the library. Otherwise, staff will scan and post the reading as a PDF.
Copyright & Permissions
The library will conduct a fair use assessment, seek copyright permission, and/or pay permissions fees on your behalf. For work protected by copyright, using smaller and fewer portions will help (a) make a stronger fair use case; (b) increase the likelihood of getting permission from the rightsholder, if we can't claim fair use; and (c) reduce the cost of permission fees. The library cannot, under any circumstance, host e-reserve readings for which copyright permission has been denied.
How to request Electronic Reserves
Options for requesting e-reserves, in order of preference:
- Reusing e-reserves from a previous semester? Let us know the course and semester, and we will copy old lists to an active course.
- For new or updated courses, send a list of complete citations to reserves@reed.edu. It is helpful to include the dates that readings are assigned.
- You may also send course syllabi that list assigned readings by date to reserves@reed.edu. Please send syllabi as an email or word processing document, not as a PDF. We will create e-reserves from all readings except those from required textbooks.
- If you already have PDFs (including title and copyright pages), we can post them as e-reserves. We might need to modify or rescan them to meet our quality and accessibility standards, or might link to an electronic version instead (to ensure copyright and license agreement compliance, or to reduce permission fees).
