Resources for your work & research

Course reserves & collection development

You are our partners in building the library collection. Questions? Contact library-acquisitions@reed.edu for general inquiries or reserves@reed.edu for course reserves orders.

Course reserves (books and e-reserves)

Course reserves are short-term book checkouts and electronic materials for class selected by faculty. The course reserves program supports students via textbook affordability and digital accessibility.

About print or e-reserves for your courses

Course reserve books check out for 3 hours. For e-reserves, Library staff scan and make accessible book chapters, manage copyright and fees, and link to journal articles. Students access e-reserves via your course Moodle.

Recommend a book purchase

All faculty and staff can recommend a book for purchase and we enthusiastically welcome requests. Please use this form to recommend a book for the library's general collection. For large requests, please contact your subject librarian.

Media (CDs, DVDs, streaming AV)

The Library provides more than books. To recommend music, films, and other media, write to Jim Holmes at holmesj@reed.edu.

Information literacy & course instruction

Subject librarians are available to help with all aspects of library research. We meet with students individually, in classes, and seminars to help students locate and use resources for research.

In addition, we collaborate with faculty to provide instruction on advanced library research methods and sources in preparation for the junior qualifying exam and senior thesis.

Library research competencies

At Reed, students should gain an understanding of the nature and organization of information resources and the ability to formulate and carry out library research. Library research competencies build year by year toward an understanding of library research as a process.
