Library

First-years

The library welcomes you to Reed - we are here to support you! The resources highlighted on this page are especially useful to navigate your first year at Reed. All library resources and services are available to current students.

As a first year student, you should understand how to find resources for Humanities 110, access course reserves, and connect with your personal librarian when you need help.

First-years VIP mug tour signup

During the first week of class, we'll be offering library tours on Wednesday 9/4 and Thursday 9/5 between 7pm-9pm. These tours are for new Reed students to get a sense of familiarity with the library and learn more about the resources we provide. Transfer students in their first year at Reed are also welcome.

Tours are led by library student workers and should take about 30 minutes. At the end of the tour you'll be the first to get one of our brand new library mugs featuring the library mascot Mugsy.

Grab your friends and classmates and sign up for a tour together! Tour space is limited and registration may fill up quickly!! All tours will meet in the library lobby. Need accommodations in order to participate fully in this event? Please let us know in the form!

Humanities 110 support

Librarians develop research guides for many courses. Check out the HUM 110 guide for support in finding books, articles, citation, art, and images.

Course reserves

Course reserves are articles, readings, and other materials selected by faculty for their courses. The library has short-term loans for print reserves, including textbooks at the library circulation desk. Other materials may be linked in your course Moodle.

Search by book title, professor name, or course number, then bring the call number to the circulation desk. Course reserve books check out for 3 hours.

Personal librarian

Incoming first-years are matched with a specific librarian who can help with any questions about the library, research, or collections. Your personal librarian is your "go-to" person in the library. They can help with:

  • questions about library policies, procedures and services
  • locating books and articles in the library
  • finding information for your research assignments, including formulating your research question, identifying search strategies, and locating the best sources
  • Hum 110 papers and resources
  • helping when you don't know where to start or can't think of what to do next

You can find your personal librarian alphabetically by your last name. Check the list below to get in touch with your personal librarian.
